HOUSING AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF NEWARK - ASSOCIATE COUNSEL
SUMMARY:
This position supports the Chief Legal Officer, NHA’s legal department and all Authority operating departments by performing legal research and preparing documents, reports, summaries and recommendations to be used by legal staff in judicial documents, legal papers, and attorney memoranda; performs related work, as necessary.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Supports the legal needs of all Authority operating departments.
• Pursues discovery matters and related document production.
• Conducts legal research; organizes and maintains research information in order to ensure ready accessibility to such information and retrieves such information upon request.
• Manages evidence and prepares exhibits for trial as directed.
• Locates and coordinates with expert witnesses for specific case needs; interviews witnesses and other parties to provide information for and under the direction of the legal staff.
• Prepares legal memoranda and other legal documents; prepares correspondence on legal matters, cases, and judicial proceedings.
• Drafts jury instructions as directed.
• Represents the Authority in proceedings before courts and agencies; assist other attorneys and legal staff as directed; synopsizes transcripts of proceedings and other documents for use by the legal staff.
• Assists in the liaison activities with government agencies and the legal staff.
• Manages case files by organizing and maintaining such files, and establishes and implements systems of retrieval of file information.
• Assists in the instruction and guidance of clerical support personnel when directly related to the legal functions being performed.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an accredited college. Must be an attorney in good standing, bar certified in the State of New Jersey, and have at least one (1) year of experience in the practice of law in a public or private agency; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
