Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey Congratulates Marybel Mercado-Ramirez, Diane E. Montes-Infante and Camelia M. Valdes on their Respective Judicial and Prosecutorial Appointment Nominations.

For Immediate Release: June 17, 2015

The Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey (“HBA-NJ”) congratulates its members and long-time supporters Marybel Mercardo-Ramirez, Diane E. Montes-Infante and Camelia M. Valdes on their respective judicial appointment and prosecutorial reappointment.  Their nominations advance the HBA-NJ’s mission of a more inclusive and diverse legal system.

Ms. Mercado-Ramirez, a graduate of Rutgers University, and of Rutgers University School of Law is a distinguished public servant. She has served the State and the County of Bergen with distinction and honor for over twelve years as an Assistant Prosecutor in the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.  During that time, Ms. Mercado-Ramirez has prosecuted more than a thousand cases.  She has earned a reputation for fairness and adherence to the rule of law.

Similarly, Ms. Montes-Infante’s nomination to become a New Jersey Workers’ Compensation Judge builds on a long career focused on public service.  Ms. Montes-Infante is a graduate of Haverford College and Rutgers University School of Law-Newark.  After graduating law school, she clerked for the Superior Court of New Jersey.  Upon completion of her judicial clerkship she served as an Assistant Deputy Public Defender in the Officer of the Public Defender, Essex County Adult Trial Region.  As a public defender, Ms. Montes-Infante was responsible for the operation of the largest Central Judicial Processing Court (CJP) in the State of New Jersey.  After several years in that post, Ms. Montes-Infante was appointed to the Newark Municipal Court where she has served to date.

Prosecutor Valdes’s reappointment breathes a renewed sense of commitment to diversity and inclusion.  During her initial term as Passaic County Prosecutor, Prosecutor Valdes managed approximately 185 employees, a $19.2 million budget, and oversaw 16 municipal police departments all with the highest degree of competence and integrity.  Prosecutor Valdes also employed her office to connect with communities and their leaders to combat crime by enforcement, rehabilitation, and education.

“Today, our Association has great cause to celebrate,” said HBA-NJ President Michael J. Plata.  “Assistant Prosecutor Mercado-Ramirez and Newark Municipal Court Judge Montes-Infante’s nomination to the bench, and Passaic County Prosecutor Valdes’s nomination for reappointment, assures that our judicial system is comprised by individuals that are both qualified and representative of the communities they serve,” added President Plata.
