    The Organization

    Newark Yoga Movement (NYM) is a dynamic eight year old 501c3 non-profit whose mission is to enhance the educational experience and provide easy access to increased peacefulness, focus and confidence as a complementary source of discipline and structure for all. NYM meets every Newark NJ child where they are, bringing them life skills through the practice of Yoga, breathing and centering at their schools and in their communities. NYM has shared yoga with 24,000+ children, 2600 educators and many in the community including firefighters and those currently in prison. 

    Purpose:

    The Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership and management of the organization with the ability to drive revenue and foster vision and strategy and its day-to-day operations, for a sustainable future. 

    NYM is looking for someone who understands and has experience with the power of yoga, the importance of education and social and emotional learning, has passion for children and the drive, experience and grit for NYM to grow in a sustainable way.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    Leadership

    • ·      Participate with Board of Directors (B o D) in developing NYM vision and strategic plan (set framework)
    • ·      Liaison with B of D on both NYM internal and external issues
    • ·      Act as a professional advisor to B of D and founder on all organizational activities
    • ·      Assist in identifying and vetting new Board Members.

    Development and Programming

    • ·      Invoice all partners for programming fees as per each individual schedule

    Operation Planning and Management

    • ·      Ensure the operation of the organization meets those of founder and the Board
    • ·      Oversee efficient day-to-day management of the organization
    • ·      Draft policies for Board approval that directly enhance organization e.g. by-laws # of Board members, executive board formation, organization policies
    • ·      Ensure that all personnel files including teachers, volunteers, donors are up to date and stored safely (e.g. teachers—w-9, insurance)
    • ·      Provide support to the Board by preparing meeting agenda and supporting materials and attending all Board meetings.
    • ·      Work with the Treasurer to ensure financials are accurate and timely and that all information is provided to accountant at the appropriate time for filings

    Marketing, Communication, PR

    • Communicate with stakeholders, keeping them informed of NYM’s work; identify changes in the community served by the organization
    • ·      Keep organization communication fresh and exciting via social media, e-letter
    • ·      Oversee website update as needed
    • ·      Work with Board and NYM teachers to identify Public Relations opportunities

    Program planning and management

    • ·      Ensure that the programs and services offered by NYM contribute to the mission and Board priorities.
    • ·      Monitor Day to day delivery of programs (connect with teachers, volunteers, program facilities including schools, agencies)
    • ·      Complete Method of Understanding (MOU) that can be given to all partners
    • ·      Assess appropriate comprehensive CRM database so all programs are accurately noted and both teachers and NYM reduce time spent on paperwork.
    • ·      Oversee special projects
    • ·      Establish good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community groups, funders, politicians, and other organizations to help achieve the goals of the organization

    Talent Management and HR

    • ·      Work with key talent liaison to make sure that all intake forms are handled in a timely manner and that appropriate follow up continues
    • ·      Maintain current database of active teachers and volunteers (talent liaison)
    • ·      Recruit and manage staff as appropriate e.g. Operations
    • ·      Coach and mentor yoga guides and evaluate as needed
    • ·      Update FAQ’s and ensure all current teachers have a copy
    • ·      Ensure monthly teacher timesheets are completed.  Issue appropriate paid seva

    Required skills, attributes and education

    • Bachelor’s degree. 5+ years of relevant work experience preferred.
    • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Outstanding interpersonal and diplomatic skills; ability to build trust and rapport with a broad range of people. Friendly, outgoing and professional demeanor.

    The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey (ACLU-NJ) seeks a creative and dynamic team player with both campaign and lobbying experience to fill the position of a full-time Public Policy Director. The Public Policy Director shapes and advances the ACLU’s policy agenda with federal, state, and local lawmakers and other agents of power. Founded in 1960, the ACLU-NJ is a not-for-profit, nonpartisan organization with more than 20,000 members and tens of thousands of supporters. It is the state’s leading organization dedicated to advancing and defending civil liberties and civil rights. 

    The Public Policy Director will spearhead the organization’s efforts to advance the ACLU’s policy agenda by planning and implementing legislative campaigns; analyzing and drafting policy proposals; lobbying federal, state and local policymakers; preparing and presenting testimony; building coalitions; and activating ACLU supporters to advance our policy priorities. Among our ongoing efforts, the Public Policy Director will oversee the ACLU-NJ’s work on criminal justice policy reform, including campaigns to reform police practices and to legalize, tax, and regulate marijuana.

    The Public Policy Director will be a part of the organization’s management team, and will work under the supervision of the Executive Director and in close collaboration with other management staff, including the Legal Director, and the Communications Director. The Public Policy Director currently supervises the Policy Counsel and a law fellow and is responsible for planning for the growth of the department with the Executive Director. The position is based in the ACLU-NJ’s downtown Newark office, which houses 19 full-time staff members and numerous volunteers.  The Public Policy Director is expected to travel throughout the state, including Trenton, on a regular basis.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Develop and oversee implementation of public policy campaigns to achieve the ACLU’s goals;
    • Manage a team of public policy staff members and work collaboratively with other staff to plan and implement effective multi-disciplinary and integrated advocacy policy campaigns, involving a combination of legislative, legal, communications, and field strategies;
    • Identify systemic patterns of civil liberties violations, envision changes in policy capable of addressing them, and carry out strategies to secure those changes;
    • Identify ways to proactively advance the ACLU’s civil liberties and civil rights priorities;
    • Oversee the ACLU-NJ’s legislative advocacy program, including tracking and analyzing legislation, drafting and delivering testimony, and drafting legislative proposals;
    • Build trusted relationships with lawmakers, agency decision-makers, staff, lobbyists and other stakeholders and identify and participate in strategic opportunities to advance priority issues;
    • Lead the growth of  networks of activists and volunteers, to mobilize support for key civil rights issues, building on a current network of ACLU-NJ members and supporters;
    • Prepare advocacy and policy materials in collaboration with the communications department, including policy reports, action alerts, talking points, issue briefs, letters, op-eds, and website materials;
    • Work in partnership with allied organizations and build coalitions to further the ACLU’s public policy priorities;
    • Represent the ACLU in community events, panels, rallies, news conferences, and know-your-rights trainings;
    • Respond to media requests, develop messaging, and organize press conferences in collaboration with communications staff;
    • Work with development staff to identify funding sources, participate in donor meetings, write funding proposals, and draft reports to funders;
    • Work collaboratively with the national office of the ACLU and other ACLU affiliates to advance nationwide public policy campaigns;
    • Participate in office management, budget planning, and developing organizational priorities;
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

    EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s degree required, J.D. preferred, and at least three years of experience in public policy work, preferably on ACLU-related issues;
    • Strong commitment to advancing the ACLU’s values, mission, and goals, with an understanding of the range of civil liberties and civil rights issues and their implications;
    • Understanding of the legislative process and political strategic planning;
    • Exceptional analytical, research, writing and oral advocacy skills, as well as the ability to communicate complex legal issues effectively to a variety of audiences;

    Poverty Justice Solutions Fellow, Community Development Project at the Urban Justice Center

    The Community Development Project (CDP) at the Urban Justice Center seeks applicants for the position of law graduate/staff attorney focusing on litigation and advocacy on behalf of low-income tenants connected to organizing campaigns.

    The law graduate will be responsible for provide:

    • Litigate administrative cases at government agencies like the New York City Commission of Human Rights, New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and the Division of Housing and Community Renewal (DHCR).
    • Participate in legislative advocacy by drafting legislation and representing CDP in meetings with lawmakers and stakeholders.      
    • Represent tenants in the area of landlord-tenant law under a student practice order until admitted to the bar. This includes affirmative litigation (e.g., HP actions, rent strikes, and 7A proceedings) on behalf of tenant associations, as well as some individual anti-eviction litigation. 
    • Staff multiple legal clinics and provide brief consultations to tenants.
    • Create educational materials and conduct various know-your-right’s trainings to community organizers and tenants across the city.  

    Desired Qualifications:

    Preference will be given to applicants who have experience in civil legal services, particularly in the area of landlord-tenant law. The successful candidate will have strong writing and analytical skills, relevant background and experience, and a demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations. A second language – especially Spanish, East Asian, or South Asian languages – is strongly preferred.
