Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Associate General Counsel for the Office of Senior Vice President and General Counsel. This position assists the University foundation on issues such as gift agreements, grants, donor requests, bequests and alumni programs; commercial transactions; contracting; procurement; intellectual property; technology licensing and commercialization; tax; corporate sponsorships; data privacy and protection; immigration and international matters.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
• Provides legal representation and advice to the Rutgers University Foundation including the negotiation of gift agreements, advice in connection with gifts, review of donor requests and bequests, and consultation to foundation staff.
• Reviews, negotiates and drafts all manner of commercial contracts in which Rutgers University will be a party for various units and divisions of the university.
• Assists with real estate and construction contracts by drafting, negotiating and reviewing leases, purchase and sale agreements, construction contracts, architect agreements, owners representative agreements.
• Assists with intellectual property, trademark and licensing and commercialization matters by reviewing agreements and providing advice to various units within the university which focus in this area.



Minimum Education and Experience

  • A law degree ( Juris Doctor, Master of Laws, Doctor of Juridical Science, etc.)
    Eight (8) years of experience in areas noted above and either be admitted to practice law in New Jersey or be admitted in another jurisdiction and be willing and able to become admitted in New Jersey as soon as practical.

  • Must have superior academic credentials
    Ability to work independently and also collaboratively in a large and complex organization
    A genuine desire to work in a higher education environment are essential.
    The University is looking for candidates who are energetic and bring a sense of urgency and passion for the importance of their work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience representing public sector clients, or working as an attorney in the public sector a plus.
    Ten (10) years of relevant experience.

  • Worldox (electronic document management system) – creating, scanning, searching, and retrieving documents
    Microsoft World, Outlook, Excel, Powerpoint
    e-Billing software – legal invoice review and approval of matters
    Westlaw – online legal research software
