THE FEDERAL PUBLIC DEFENDER is accepting applications for the position of a Sentencing Resource Counsel assistant federal public defender. The federal defender organization operates under authority of the Criminal Justice Act, 18 U.S.C. § 3006A, to provide defense services in federal criminal cases and related matters by appointment from the court.


Requirements: The applicant must (1) be a graduate of an accredited law school, and have admission and good standing in a state bar; (2) have extensive experience in federal sentencing as well as thorough familiarity with federal sentencing policy; (3) have excellent research and writing skills, good communication skills, and the ability to work independently from a remote work site. Travel is a necessary part of the job. Experience providing legal training, particularly on federal sentencing, is preferred. Appointment is subject to a satisfactory background investigation including an FBI name and fingerprint check and an IRS tax check.
Duties: Sentencing Resource Counsel (SRC) provide advice to support the Federal Defender Sentencing Guidelines Committee in developing and conveying the collective views and comments of the federal defenders to the U.S, Sentencing Commission as required by 28 U.S.C. § 994(o). SRC formulate sentencing policy with the Defenders Guidelines Committee, interact with the Commission and other agencies and organizations, facilitate communication between the Defender Guidelines Committee and federal defenders, and provide sentencing litigation support. SRC track emerging sentencing issues, circuit splits, and other issues that arise relevant to sentencing, including probation practices, pending legislation, and developments in social science. SRC also provide training assistance related to federal sentencing law, policy and practice.


Selection Criteria: The successful applicant will have a clearly demonstrated aptitude for excellence in federal sentencing practice and policy, a commitment to indigent defense, and a reputation for personal integrity. Applicant must also possess the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and outside organizations.
Salary and Benefits. Salary is commensurate with that of an assistant U.S. attorney with similar qualifications and experience. The position is in the excepted service (at-will employment) and does not carry the tenure rights of the competitive Civil Service. The position includes regular Government employment benefits including health and life insurance, retirement, and the Thrift Savings Plan. Salary is payable only by Electronic Funds Transfer (direct deposit). Offer of employment is subject to the availability of funds
