    • Juris Doctorate Degree from an American Bar Association accredited institution
    • Admitted to practice, and in continuous good standing, in at least one State, and able to qualify (if not already) for the in-house license in New Jersey
    • §  Twelve years legal background, eight years in-house at a corporate law department.

    Volunteer Lawyers for Justice (VLJ), a statewide legal services organization, seeks a bilingual attorney (Spanish/English) to join our dynamic team. The attorney will join our housing team and will focus on eviction defense and housing stability for tenants across the state. VLJ’s mission is to improve the lives of economically disadvantaged adults, children and families living in New Jersey by empowering them with the tools, advice and pro bono representation needed to obtain fair and equal treatment within the legal system. To carry out its mission, VLJ operates 10 distinct pro bono programs. VLJ has 15 staff members, including 8 attorneys and a panel of more than 1,500 volunteers.     The staff attorneys will work on VLJ’s Tenancy Program, providing legal assistance to tenants facing eviction due to the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing eviction crisis. The staff attorneys will manage a dynamic workload that includes both casework and program management tasks. Duties include conducting client intake, coordinating and staffing virtual and in-person legal clinics, recruiting, training and supporting pro bono attorneys, placing cases with volunteer attorneys, presenting legal seminars, managing client data and files, preparing reports, conducting outreach in the community, and representing clients in court proceedings across the state.

    VLJ seeks highly motivated attorneys with a demonstrated commitment to public interest law. Ideal candidates will have:

    • License to practice law in good standing in New Jersey
    • 2+ years of relevant experience
    • Insight into issues affecting our clients that will bring a new perspective to VLJ, which may be based on prior experience working in the area of housing instability, poverty, racial justice, or personal experience as a member of a historically marginalized group, or deep knowledge of a relevant body of law

    The Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund (LALDEF) – located in Trenton, NJ – seeks compassionate and focused candidates for the role of Supervising/Staff Attorney of Immigration Legal Services (SA). Directing a small team of Legal Service Coordinators, the SA will lead and supervise the provision of immigration legal services (Naturalization, SIJS, DACA, TPS, Adjustment of Status, U and T visas, VAWA, and asylum cases) to low- and moderate-income clients of LALDEF’s Welcome House Community Center in Trenton.

    This is a senior, full-time position. This position offers the right candidate an opportunity to contribute in meaningful ways to a growing organization that serves the needs of the immigrant community in Mercer County.

    Leadership and management responsibilities include:

    • Draft occasional legal briefings and represent asylum applicants in immigration court;
    • Supervise and review the work product of BIA accredited representative(s) and those seeking accreditation (both staff and volunteers), administrative staff, and legal interns in the LALDEF office in Trenton and at occasional community clinics;
    • Identify professional development opportunities and facilitate training for legal department staff, volunteers, and interns, as needed;
    • Stay apprised of developments in immigration law and communicate pertinent regulatory and legislative changes to LALDEF's staff, in a timely basis; 
    • Draft and/or review content of all LALDEF forms and information materials for publication pertaining to Legal Services;
    • Develop and maintain relationships with other legal services and community-based organizations;
    • Foster connections to local law schools/universities to recruit legal interns; and
    • Collaborate with the Executive Director and/or grant writer in the writing of grant proposals, reports, and presentations to funders and potential funders and the preparation of the annual department budget.


    • A law degree from an accredited law school and admission to the NJ state bar required.
    • Command of written and spoken Spanish.
